There are plenty of popular and effective diet plans, which claim to be effective when trying to lose weight. But the result for all of them is not the same. Recently, there has been great hype around the bone broth diet plan. This diet plan blends a low-carb, paleo diet with intermittent fasting. The diet claims to help you lose up to 6 kilos and reduce the waistline by 4 inches in just 21 days. And all you need to do in this diet is to sip bone broth, which is made by simmering animal bones up to 24 hours.
But does this diet helps to lose weight? Let’s find out:
What is the bone broth diet?
Created by a naturopathic doctor Kellyann Petrucci, the diet claim to help lose 6 kilos in 21 days. A person can extend the diet if he/she wants to.
While following this diet, for five days one needs to consume low-carb, paleo-style meals that include meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nonstarchy vegetables, and healthy fats and bone broth. Dairy products, grains, legumes, added sugars, and alcohol are to be avoided.
For the remaining two days of the week, the person has to follow mini-fasts, in which they are allowed to drink bone broth.
Bone broth is like stock made by simmering bones, fresh veggies, and aromatics for 18 to 24 hours or longer to break down the collagen and minerals present in the bone and allow them to ooze into the broth.
One has to pick two nonconsecutive days per week to do a mini-fast, but on all days you should have your meal before 7 pm.
How does the bone broth diet promote weight loss?
This diet is high in protein, collagen, and minerals, which keeps the tissues healthy, increases satiety, and keeps the gut happy. By sipping bone broth between meals, weight watchers may feel less of an urge to grab unhealthily processed and sugar-laden food items. Additionally, as bone broth is mostly water, it keeps your body hydrated. All these things decrease daily calorie intake. Lastly on fasting days, only having bone broth can help in weight loss and improve insulin resistance.
Apart from weight loss, there are numerous other benefits of eating a paleo diet and drinking bone broth. It helps in decreasing inflammation, is good for sound sleep and improves skin health
Is it safe?
As per experts, the diet is low in calories, which increases a person’s ability to burn excess calories and lose weight. Moreover, as it is high in protein content, following this diet helps to build muscle and keeps a person fuller for a longer period.
But some experts say that the bone broth diet is dangerously restrictive and is an unhealthy, short-term fix for weight loss, which will later lead to weight gain.
It might be challenging to follow the Bone Broth Diet. Since the diet restricts whole food groups, a person might be at risk of nutrient deficiency, such as for calcium and fiber.
Though some studies suggest that this diet might help when trying to shed kilos, still it is uncertain whether they’re better than other calorie deficit diets.
