Back in 2000, the Aussie star was in his best shape for Gladiator, but now he’s piled on the pounds for his latest role. One that looks very much like a fat suit for new film Unhinged. The 55-year-old stars as a psychotic man who gets revenge on a woman who beeps at him in a fit of road rage by taking it out on those closest to her. While this very much looks like Crowe is wearing a bodysuit, he did once put on 63 pounds for a role.
Back in 2008, Crowe starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies.
And to play a CIA boss, the director asked Crowe to pile on four and half stone.
However, the actor was so disgusted with his appearance that he wasn’t keen to do it again.
He told USA Today at the time: “Ridley called up and said ‘Now, mate, would you mind putting on a significant amount of weight? I see him (the character) as an ex-athlete who has let himself go’.”
Crowe continued: “And I trust him so much, I say yes first and rationalise pretentious artistic reason later.
“When I see my gut hanging between my legs, I don’t know what I was thinking. I’m not sure I’d do that again.”
While actors like Crowe, and most recently Gary Oldman and Chris Hemsworth, chose the body suit, others like Christian Bale put on weight the natural way.
The former Batman is well known for his incredible transformations from superhero buff to dangerously thin.
