Coronavirus: NYC, Seattle, NOLA, San Francisco good examples, CDC says – Deseret News

Four key cities across the United States have been following stay-at-home orders, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What’s going on:

A new report from the CDC suggests four new cities have embraced stay-at-home orders more than others.

The four cities include:

  • New York City
  • Seattle
  • New Orleans
  • San Francisco

These cities had “substantial numbers of coronavirus patients early in the outbreak that mandated stay-at-home orders in mid- to late-March,” according to CNN.

In all four places, about 80% of people were leaving home on Feb. 26. But by April 1, that decline 20 percentage points total and 40 percentage points in each city. The mobility dropped each time because of the social distancing order.

What they’re saying:

  • “When you put in these social distancing measures, they do seem to work.” — Kathleen Ethier, leader of the CDC’s community mitigation task force for the COVID-19 response, according to CNN, the study’s co-author.
  • She added: “They didn’t leave their home at any point for any reason. They didn’t go outside. That’s significant.”
  • “The CDC report shows that when successive mitigation steps were put into place, individuals tended to heed them,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, in Baltimore, per MedicalExpress.
