Health tips for Peel seniors during the coronavirus pandemic – mississauga.com

Seniors comprise one of the few groups that health agencies around the globe have labelled as “high-risk” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those over 65 and/or who have underlying health issues are more susceptible to getting sick.

Because of this, multiple precautions have been put in place to ensure seniors’ safety.

Peel Public Health recommends anyone older than 70 years old should stay home entirely. This recommendation could leave residents in precarious situations.

To help seniors stay healthy and happy during this time, we’ve rounded up some health tips from Peel Public Health and the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE).

1. Stay at home 

Peel Public Health is advising seniors to stay home as much as possible and suggest only leaving their residence for essential trips such as medical appointments.

2. Rely on family, friends or neighbourhood sources

Seniors who need to run errands, like grocery shopping or picking up medications, should rely on family or friends to do it for them.

If this is not possible, meal delivery options are available throughout the region. Meals on Wheels, Free Meal Help Brampton and Langar Seva Meal Support are also delivering prepared meals.

The City of Brampton via its Senior Support Task Force, Roots Community Service, and the Solel Synagogue also offer grocery and medication pickup services.

3. Exercise solo

Exercise is essential for both mental and physical health and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Seniors should continue to keep up with their daily exercise but, by themselves.

The National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE) recommends virtually exercising with family or friends as a good alternative.

WellFort, which oversees Four Corners Health and the Bramalea Community Health Centre, have started creating YouTube videos for working out and managing your health during the pandemic. 

4. Stay connected

This tip can be used for seniors or those wanting to help seniors. 

According to multiple health agencies, staying connected socially with friends and family is key, especially during the pandemic.

Laura Tamblyn Watts of NICE created a list of ways to connect with seniors. She suggests setting up times to e-visit family or friends, or to check up on seniors in your life.

Virtual dining, watching TV or movies together via video and playing electronic games are some other ways Tamblyn listed to stay connected.
