KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment released tips to stay healthy ahead of the Saharan dust expected to enter the Midwest over the weekend.

The dust could affect the health of people spending time outdoors.

KDHE said the dust can cause burning eyes, runny nose, coughing and even bronchitis.

Those with respiratory issues, preexisting heart or lung disease, or the children or elderly could experience worse symptoms.

KDHE issued the following steps to stay healthy on days when the dust is present:

  • Healthy people should limit or avoid strenuous outdoor exercise.
  • People with respiratory or heart-related illness should remain indoors.
  • Help keep indoor air clean by closing doors and windows and running the air conditioners with air filters.
  • Keep hydrated by drinking lots of water.
  • Contact your doctor if you have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath or severe fatigue.
