When I first moved to New York from a suburb in Ohio, I was amazed that the city had fast-casual restaurants dedicated to only making salads. I even remember telling my parents with excitement about Just Salad, the spot that makes — well, I’m sure you can guess.

The midwest had yet to catch up on the healthy fast-food bandwagon, and as someone who asked her mom to pack her caesar salads for lunch in elementary school, I basked in the convenience. (Call me basic, I don’t even care!) However, a few weeks into my salad to-go fascination, I was also shocked when I looked at my bank statements and realized how much I was spending on it — around $12 to $15 per salad, four times per week, minimum.

So, I started trading in my store-bought salads for the homemade kind. I gathered all of the ingredients to copy my favorite restaurant menu items and bought myself a pair of these OXO Good Grips Chopped Salad Scissors.

Now, this might sound even more ridiculous than what you’ve read thus far, but I think that chopped salad tastes better than the non-chopped kind. Hear me out: All of the toppings and ingredients are cut into smaller sizes so you can get more of each in every bite. And, these salad scissors make chopping easy.

To use, put all of your salad ingredients in a bowl and then place the blade of the scissors down in the center and start cutting. You’ll need to toss the lettuce around a little to get all the bits at the bottom, but overall, the process takes less than one minute. If you like chopped salads, I highly recommend these scissors.

The OXO Good Grips Chopped Salad Scissors have a plastic outer edge and are rounded at the bottom, so you don’t have to worry about scratching or ruining any of your bowls. When you’re done using, they’re pretty easy to clean, too. Simply rinse them in the sink with hot water and mild soap, then dry (like you would with any standard knife). Not to mention, I’ve had mine now for over five years and they’re still as useful as the day I got them.

You can find them on Amazon for $19.99 and, take it from me, save yourself the money and time of ordering a salad that you can easily make at home.
