Coronavirus & the Classroom: Mental health tips for students – KBJR 6

DULUTH, MN– As kids across the Northland return to fall learning, families may be concerned about the mental health repercussions.

This week, KBJR 6 Today co-anchors CeCe Gaines and Ryan Haff, spoke with a psychotherapist to get tips on how parents can provide better support for their students.

Dr. Annette Nunez is a psychotherapist who specializes in treating children through emotional difficulties.

Dr. Nunez says, to help with the added anxiety and stress due to the pandemic, parents should stay calm in front of their children as a first step.

If children are learning from home, Nunez says, establishing a schedule and setting up virtual or COVID-friendly playdates is imperative.

On the flip side, for students heading into the classroom, parents should explain the importance of wearing masks.

Next week, Ryan and CeCe sit down with principals from local high schools to hear how the start of the school year is going.
