Daily coronavirus cases, hospitalizations reach new highs in North Carolina – WRAL.com

— Gov. Roy Cooper will provide a coronavirus update at 3 p.m. on Wednesday as cases spike in the state.

On Wednesday, confirmed cases in North Carolina increased by 2,253, bringing the new statewide total to 266,136. Thirty-four more people died in the past day, bringing the state’s COVID-19 death toll to 4,245.

Average new daily cases are at 2,221, a new high, after three record days in a row.

For the 22nd day in a row, more than 1,000 people remain hospitalized with COVID-19 in the state. The rolling average of daily hospitalizations is the highest it’s been since coronavirus first appeared in North Carolina 239 days ago.

Almost 7% of COVID-19 tests taken in North Carolina come back positive.

The country also hit an all-time high in new coronavirus cases over the weekend — with more than 83,000 infections were reported in one day.

Free COVID-19 testing is available in Wake County and across the state.

Even if someone does not feel sick, they could still have coronavirus. Research suggests that about half of all transmission events can be traced back to individuals still in the so-called pre-symptomatic stage, before they start to feel ill. Some people will never develop symptoms of the virus, health officials said.
